The word “Ramadan” comes from the Arabic root ar-rammed, meaning scorching heat or dryness. Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is celebrated worldwide. For 29 or 30 days, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk. Furthermore, its time for Muslims to worship and centralize their faith. Today we will go over the vocabulary and some phrases used to talk about Ramadan in English.
Before learning about the Ramadan vocabulary and Phrases we should need to be familiar with what Ramadan is. and why do we need to fast for a long day? What’s the actual purpose of fasting?
What is Ramadan? The Islamic Holy month.
“Basically Ramadan is the month of fasting and brushing aside from the things that are haram or impure for the body in Islam.”
It’s the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. According to Islamic filiopietistic, it was during Ramadan that God divulge the Holy book, known as Quran, to the Prophet Muhammad. This came up on the day that is known as the Night of Power. For Muslims, Ramadan is the time of the year in which they read the Quran, say their prayers regularly, and keep fasts. It is believed that this is the month of redemption and salvation for the Muslims and God forgive the sins that we made all year around.
Few folks believe Ramadan is all about fasting, which means not eating or drinking during certain hours. Even though It’s true that fasting is a big part of this period, but here the thing that matters the most is the need to understand that Ramadan is a holy month, it’s not about fasting, it’s an alarm that alerts people for,redemption and salvation of their of sins. And, Muslims celebrate this period with different traditions, according to their region.
When is it celebrated?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. This calendar is based on the phases of the moon, and that’s why it is called a lunar calendar (monthly cycles of the Moon). The solar calendar, on the other hand, is based on the sun. The months of the lunar calendar are made of 29 or 30 days, while the solar calendar months are made of 30 or 31 days, except February.
In 2023, Ramadan will probably start on Wednesday, March 22, and end on Thursday, April 20. However, dates vary according to the crescent moon and they change depending on the country.
How does fasting work?
Now, let’s talk about fasting and its role in Ramadan. Let’s go over some more words about Ramadan.
1: One of the Pillars of Islam
The Five Pillars of Islam compose the basic norms of Islamic practice.
- Fasting during Ramadan, which is called sawm,
- shahada (confession of faith),
- salat (prayers),
- zakat (alms giving),
- Hajj (the pilgrimage to Mecca).
2: Dawn and dusk
Dawn is what we call the first appearance of light in the sky before sunrise. On the other hand, dusk refers to the time before night when it is not yet dark. Twilight is the name given to the period between dawn and sunrise or the period between dusk and sunset. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk. and refrain to eat and drink during this time of the day for 30 days.
3: Ramadan isn’t all about food and drink
One of the biggest fallacies about fasting during Ramadan is that it means Muslims need to refrain only from food and drink. The truth is that besides not eating or drinking, it is also important to avoid sexual activity and other forms 0f imm0ral behaviour, such as impure thoughts, even pastimes like watching TV or listening to music.
4: Time to break the fast
The meal before dawn is called the suhoor (sehri). That’s another one of the words about Ramadan. Muslims break their fast again after the sunset prayer. They usually gather in their homes or mosques to eat a meal called ifṭār, which means breakfast. Common foods are dates, apricots, vegetables, rice, chaat, and meat.
5: The Feast
A feast is a celebration that has a lot of special foods. Some traditions for Eid al-Fitr include: women dressing, baking special treats, exchanging gifts, visiting the graves of the deceased relatives, and gatherings for special family meals and praying in mosques. The end of Ramadan is celebrated with a holiday called Eid al-Fitr, which means the feast of fast-breaking.
